I was running away from a Komodo Panther. Its face was awful, and you could see its fangs coming out violently. You could tell the creature was ready to devour me. I heard a whisper saying: "Help me!" I noticed that it was my sister's voice. I looked to my right and she was running with me. I realized that the Komodo Panther wasn't really chasing me, it was chasing her. The monster jumped and when it was about to land on Chloe, I woke up screaming. My mom came running to my room with a desperate look on her face. She said: “What the fuck is wrong with you? Can’t you be a normal kid and stop having nightmares? I swear to god I will die of a heart attack one of these days.”
I told her that I was sorry and that it wasn’t my fault. She started scolding me and then it led us to a fight.
”It’s not good for a sixteen year old brat to be having nightmares every night. I’m going to tell your father I’m sending you to a mental hospital so you can learn how to survive with these stupid nightmares that don’t let me sleep well. Why do you think I’ve dark spots under my eyes?”
“Maybe because you can’t stop crying about your beloved daughter, your favorite! How come you only love one of your daughters while you treat me like shit!”
“Treat you like shit? How can you insult your sweet mother who takes care of you every single day? I give you food, a home, a great education, and a family!”
“You want me to insult you? You are fucking heartless bitch! You're never home! You only go to the Garden to drink tea with those old bitches that are friends of yours!”
“Excuse me? Alright selfish little brat I’m going to punish you. You know what? I wish you were the one who was picked at the Plaza instead of Chloe!”
She left the room in tears, and I also started crying for a while, but I sucked it up. Today was the day that the 10 “lucky” teens would be picked for the dome. After dreaming about Chloe, and thinking over and over again, I had made up my mind. I put on my boring grey dress that every girl is supposed to wear to The Coming of Age, added a black blazer that combines with the black simple belt of the dress plus a white flower crown (I might be obsessed with white flowers). I brushed my hair and my teeth and left to the Plaza. The way to the Plaza with my mom was quiet, I can determine why she was speechless but I just can’t believe she doesn’t love me. I was in shock to hear those words coming out of her mouth violently.
When we arrived at the Plaza, my mom went to the parent section while I stood with the rest of the teenagers. I stayed there in front of the stage, waiting for Ms. Tabitha and Daimon to come out of his house. After a few minutes, the huge golden door opened and everyone clapped and cheered joyfully for those assholes. Ms. Tabitha was wearing an ugly green dress that made her look like a walking piece of mold. Daimon stood at the microphone to give his speech.
- “Welcome everybody to the day we have been expecting for six months: The Coming of Age. Today, 10 brave young men and women will prove their bravery and capability to survive in the world. These teenagers will have to face the challenge of living in the Dome and see whether they can become the first person to survive and achieve The Coming of Age. Now I’m gonna give the spotlight to the beautiful young lady Ms. Tabitha.”
- “Oh! Mr. Daimon, you are such a charming gentleman. Now let’s begin picking the names. The first one is…Jack Pierce!”
After nine names I stood up from where I was sitting and walked to the stage. I got up, avoiding the guards and walk towards Ms. Tabitha. I pushed her to a side and stood at the microphone to say:
- “I volunteer for The Coming of Age!”
You make ask why I volunteered, well there are two reasons why I did it: I wanted to find out if Chloe was still alive, and to get away from my mother and this prison I’m living in.
My stomach was killing me, and I was very dizzy. Everyone at the Plaza was shocked, even my mom was with her mouth wide open. Nobody said anything, they didn’t know what to do, so Ms. Tabitha just directed me to the place where the other nine teenagers were sitting. She introduced everyone of us and took us to the photographing area. Then, before entering Daimon’s mansion, Ms.Tabitha said: “Ladies and gentleman, the ten brave teens for The Coming of Age!” The crowd went nuts with joy. The big golden door opened and we walked in line to the mansion. I looked back as the door was slowly closing.
